In this post, we will guide you through the process of making Haw Flakes at home.
Haw Flakes are traditional Chinese candies made from the fruit of the Chinese Hawthorn, known for their sweet, tangy taste and heart-shaped appearance.
The recipe is simple and requires only two main ingredients - Hawthorn and Rock sugar. It's an enjoyable DIY project, and the end product is a delicious treat that can be enjoyed by all ages. Apart from the ingredients, you will need a blender and an electric oven or air fryer.
This homemade version allows you to control the sweetness level and ensure natural ingredients are used without any artificial additives. In addition, making these at home is a great way to spend time with your family, especially with children who can learn about the process of making their own candies.
Ingredients
Ingredients | Quantity |
Hawthorn | 1150g |
Rock sugar | 700g |
In addition, you may need a blender and an electric oven or air fryer.
Steps
1
Remove the stem and core from fresh hawthorn. The amount in the recipe is for hawthorn without the core removed, the total weight after preparation is 1000 grams.
2
Put the prepared hawthorn in a clean pot and steam until cooked, after the water boils, steam for 25 minutes.
3
Pour the steamed hawthorn and icing sugar powder (1000g hawthorn meat with 700g sugar powder) into the blender while it's still hot.
4
Use the "sauce" function of the blender to blend into hawthorn paste. The color of the paste made from the blender is lighter, and the finished product is basically the same color as the takeaway. Other blenders can also be used, but some are not finely blended and are not suitable for this.
5
Pour the blended hawthorn paste into a clean container, and it will naturally solidify into a block when cooled.
6
Take it out after half a day. Depending on the humidity of the environment, you may need to let it set for longer until it is completely solid. After taking it out, cut it into thin slices no more than 2 millimeters thick.
7
Place the raw hawthorn slices on the baking tray.
8
Turn on the upper and lower fire of the oven, 90 degrees, turn on the hot air circulation (or use the air fryer), and you will have dried hawthorn slices in about 3 hours.
Tips
The specific baking time will vary depending on the thickness of the slices. Keep a close eye on it, and when it feels hard enough, it's done.
